Originally founded in 1946 at Gyeongseong University, the Seoul National University (SNU) Linguistics Department was the first modern research center for linguistics and languages in Korea, and continues to be an influential institution in our field to this day.
Our faculty has expertise in all major fields of theoretical research including phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, historical linguistics and computational linguistics.
Our department offers courses which are not limited to the traditional core areas of linguistics. Courses in interdisciplinary subjects such as computational linguistics, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics are also offered. In addition, we are responsible for teaching undergraduate courses on a variety of individual languages—Italian, Manchu, Mongolian, Swahili.
