In memory of Prof. Jiro IKEGAMI
(1920-2011): With a selected bibliography Toshiro TSUMAGARI (Hokkaido University, Japan) Professor Jiro Ikegami (Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University) passed
away on July 15, 2011. He was undoubtedly one of the greatest pioneers of the
scientific study in the Tungus-Manchu languages. He covered various aspects of
linguistics (phonology, morphology, lexicology and historical-comparative
study) dealing with wide range of languages: Tungusic and other neighboring
languages including Altaic, Paleoasiatic, Ainu and Japanese. His main
contributions may be divided into four topics: 1) Researches on the Manchu
language, 2) Descriptive study of the Uilta language, 3) Comparative study of
the Tungusic languages, and 4) Areal-historical studies of Northeast Asian
languages. This is a
brief description of his academic achievements with a selected bibliography of
his books and important articles written in European languages.
