In memory of Prof. Jiro IKEGAMI (1920-2011): With a selected bibliography

Toshiro TSUMAGARI (Hokkaido University, Japan)

Professor Jiro Ikegami (Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University) passed away on July 15, 2011. He was undoubtedly one of the greatest pioneers of the scientific study in the Tungus-Manchu languages. He covered various aspects of linguistics (phonology, morphology, lexicology and historical-comparative study) dealing with wide range of languages: Tungusic and other neighboring languages including Altaic, Paleoasiatic, Ainu and Japanese. His main contributions may be divided into four topics: 1) Researches on the Manchu language, 2) Descriptive study of the Uilta language, 3) Comparative study of the Tungusic languages, and 4) Areal-historical studies of Northeast Asian languages.

This is a brief description of his academic achievements with a selected bibliography of his books and important articles written in European languages.
